Teaching Fellowships

As part of the ASCEND Inititiative, teaching fellowships support collaborative teaching engagements between a faculty member at an HBCU partner institution and a Yale faculty member. Collaborations across teaching styles and formats are encouraged. Interdisciplinary collaborations are welcome. Example collaborations include two faculty members teaching interrelated courses during the same term at their own campuses and bringing their students together in virtual conversation, to work on joint projects, and to meet in person through joint field trips as part of the work for the term.

Timeline

Spring 2025 semester proposals will be accepted beginning April 15, 2024. Proposals are due May 31, 2024. Awards will be announced June 17, 2024.

Funding
  • Each faculty fellow will receive a summer stipend to recognize the effort they’ll spend over the summer developing the course.
  • Programmatic funds will be provided to support field trips, joint guest speakers, group project expenses, and other pre-approved course costs.
Expectations for Proposals

The faculty and students are expected to collaborate in innovative, interactive, and compelling ways. The courses are expected to be taught separately but to interconnect in meaningful ways. The course subjects are not expected to be identical but should interconnect in ways that inspire students to be excited about the topics of both courses and about what they can learn from each other.

Application Materials

All application materials must be submitted through Interfolio by the deadline specified above.  Applications must include:

1. A brief description of each course and how they will interconnect (1000 words maxiumum). In addition, syllabi are desirable but not required.

2. A curriculum vitae (CV) from each faculty member.

3. A detailed budget identifying the expenses for both courses. Note that support will be provided to cover the faculty members’ travel in order to guest lecture in the courses, and for student travel on a joint field trip. Up to $15,000 in total course expenses will be considered.
