Faculty Ranks

Ladder faculty ranks include:
  • Professor with tenure
  • Professor on continuing appointment in the Schools of Medicine and Public Health
  • Clinical Professors of Law
  • Professor on the clinical tracks in the Schools of Medicine and Nursing
  • Associate professor with tenure
  • Associate professor on term
  • Assistant professor
  • Lecturer convertible
Instructional faculty ranks include:
  • Professor in the practice
  • Professor adjunct
  • Associate professor adjunct
  • Assistant professor adjunct
  • Lecturer, Senior Lecturer, & Senior Lecturer II
  • Lector, Senior Lector I & II
  • Critic, Senior Critic
  • Instructor
Research faculty ranks include:
  • Senior research scientist/scholar
  • Research scientist/scholar
  • Associate research scientist/scholar

Race and ethnicity

Underrepresented faculty (URM)

URM stands for “underrepresented minority.” Inclusion in this category is based on information self-reported by each respondent. Individuals categorized as URM are those U.S. citizens and U.S. permanent residents who selected any of the following categories, plus those who selected two or more options from all possible race/ethnicity categories:

  • Black or African American
  • Hispanic, Latina, Latino, Latinx
  • Native American or Native Alaskan (and other Indigenous/First Nations groups of the Americas)
  • Native Hawaiian or Pacific Islander
  • Two or more races (i.e., respondents who selected two or more race/ethnicity categories, regarless of category, are included in URM numbers)
International

Faculty who are not U.S. citizens or permanent U.S. residents are included in this category.

Sex and Gender

Survey respondents were given the following options for self-reporting sex and gender.
